Helping Others During the COVID-19 Crisis

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on many members of our local communities. In the midst of this crisis, it’s important that we all do our part to help support those in need. While abiding by recommended social distancing guidelines limits some volunteer opportunities, here are a few ideas to help you support others while staying safe.

DONATE BLOOD

Blood collection agencies continue to seek blood donations to aid the fight against the coronavirus. Since there is no known end date to the crisis, they are requesting increased donations to meet expected future demand. If you’re healthy and eligible, consider giving blood during this time of need.

CONNECT AND VOLUNTEER VIRTUALLY

To comply with CDC guidelines, most in-person volunteer activities have been postponed or cancelled. Don’t let that stop you from lending a helping hand! Many nonprofits are utilizing technology to stay connected with the individuals they serve. Explore ways to volunteer from the comfort of your own home. This may include making phone calls or virtual visits to the homebound or elderly who may not have daily contact with loved ones and family members.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

Local businesses are the lifeblood of our communities and have been drastically impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. Dining rooms may be closed, but many local restaurants are still offering take-out and curbside pick-up options. If your budget allows, schedule a meal for take-out and enjoy your favorite local cuisine at home with your family.

ENCOURAGE THOSE ON THE FRONT LINES

It’s easy to overlook employees in essential business services who are working to keep us sustained during these difficult times. Next time you’re at the grocery store, pharmacy, doctor’s office or laundromat, offer a word of encouragement to the individual assisting you. Many communities have also organized ways to recognize hospital workers, police officers and firefighters while maintaining a safe social distance. It is important that we support each other during this challenging time.
